Find answers to commonly asked questions about automated file management and FileKeep features.
File Management
Yes, files that are archived will be moved to a folder named FileKeep Archive in the same container folder where the file currently resides. This keeps your archived files organized and easy to find.
As long as the new folder is within one of your monitored folders or subfolders, FileKeep will still apply the expiration date action that was originally set.
If you move the file outside of monitored folders, FileKeep will no longer track it for expiration.
Yes! When FileKeep moves a file to the Archive folder or Trash, the expiration date options are no longer linked to the file. You are free to manually move the files back without needing to remove the original expiration date settings.
The file will be treated as a regular file until you set new expiration options if desired.
App Behavior & Settings
FileKeep needs to be active for expired files to be moved. If a file expired while FileKeep was inactive, the expired file will be processed at the next launch of FileKeep.
Tip: Keep FileKeep running in the background to ensure timely processing of expired files.
When adding an expiration date to a file, you have the option to choose between:
Prompt before moving - FileKeep will ask for confirmation
Automatically move without confirmation - Silent processing
You can adjust the default selection for this behavior in FileKeep's Settings.
Monitoring & Setup
To monitor a folder with FileKeep:
Open FileKeep and select which folders you want to monitor
Add expiration dates to files within those monitored folders
Choose whether files should be archived or moved to trash when they expire
Set notification preferences for each file or use default settings
FileKeep will automatically track all files in monitored folders and their subfolders.
FileKeep supports all file types - documents, images, videos, archives, executables, and any other files on your Mac. The app works at the file system level, so it can manage expiration dates for any file regardless of format.
Yes! FileKeep allows you to set different expiration dates and actions for files in different folders. You can have some folders where files automatically archive after 30 days, while others may move to trash after 7 days, or any custom timeframe you prefer.
Each file's expiration settings are independent and can be customized individually.
